The Rise of Rome
Cornell Notes
How did geography play a role in Rome's origins?
Rome is in Italy which is a Peninsula in the Mediterranean region. Rome has a mild climate, lots of farmland, and rich soil. This attracted many people including people from Greece.
Where was Rome located?
Rome was built on 7 hills that are located near the Tiber River, the Tiber River gave the Romans fresh water and also a way to travel to the rest of the world. But the hills that Rome was built on were steep enough for the Romans to avoid attacks from pirates.
How did Rome begin?
It is not very clear how Rome began, but there is a legend about 2 twins brother. It is said that 2 twin brother were left by the Tiber River as babies and then they were rescued by a female wolf. The 2 brothers were raised their whole life by this wolf, and later when they were grown they decided to build a city. The 2 twins continuously argued about what the name of this city should be. The fighting turned violent and only ended when one twin, Remus, died, and as a result the city was named Rome after Romulus.
What were some of the early influences of Rome?
There were two main groups of people that really influenced Rome, the Etruscans and the Greeks. From the Greeks the Romans learned how to grow olives and grapes, they also adopted the Greek alphabet, and eventually they modeled their architecture, sculpture, and literature. The Etruscans were skilled metal workers who made money from mining and trade. But the main thing that the Etruscans did for Rome was set up a model for what the Roman army would eventually become.
Why was Rome so strong?
In the early days of the Roman Republic every male citizen who owned land was forced to join the army. The Romans originally fought like Greek armies until they realized that this way was slow and hard to control. As a result they broke into smaller groups.
Why were Roman rulers smart?
As the Romans expands through Italy they built military settlements and built roads between these towns. They Romans made everyone feel like they were apart of the Roman Empire and treated everyone fairly. The Romans did this because they realized that conquered people are more likely to be loyal if they are treated well.
Summary:
After the Etruscans took control of Rome it was ruled by the Tarquin family. The Tarquins started to grow more and more cruel, and as a result the Pomans began to rebel. Their rebellion led to the transition from a kingdom to a republic. Rome;s excellent soldiers allowed them to defeat other Latin's nearby including the Etruscans, as a result the Romans gained control of almost all of Italy, creating the Roman empire.
