What did Augustus Caesar achieve?
During his rule Augustus achieved many things. He created a professional army made entirely of Roman citizens, he also created the praetorian guard, a group of 9,000 soldiers whose soul job was to protect the emperor.He also conquered new territory in northern Europe and built Rome into the city we know today. During his rule Augustus united the Mediterranean region and imported food from Africa to feed the poor. Augustus also strived to fix the tax and legal systems, he appointed proconsuls, and government paid tax collectors. He also created a set of laws that applied to everyone even people who were not Roman citizens.
Who led Rome after Augustus?
Augustus Caesar ruled for a total of 40 years and died at the age of 76. There were many emperor that led Rome after Augustus but not all of them were considered good emperors or sane for that matter. After Augustus' death Rome's people began to panic because there was nothing that told them how the next emperor would be chosen. Augustus had been training Tiberius to follow him, and so he did and became the first emperor to follow Augustus. After Tiberius was Claudius who was also a good emperor like Augustus and Tiberius who came before him. After Claudius came Caligula who had a mental illness, he had many people murdered, wasted a lot of money, and made his favorite horse consul, he ruled until he was killed by the praetorian guard. Then came Nero who was just as crazy if not crazier than Caligula, he killed his mother and two of his wives. But he is most famous for fiddling while Rome burned, he ruled until he committed suicide.
What Emperors were considered "Good Emperors"?
Of the emperors that ruled after Augustus very few could be considered good emperors. These few emperors included, Vespasian who followed Nero, he restored the peace and created the Colosseum. Other good emperors include Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. While these emperors ruled, trade increased, agriculture flourished, many building projects occurred, programs were created to help ordinary people, and Romans experienced 100 years of peace.
What unified the Empire?
The Roman Empire reached its largest size under Trajan, it consisted of 3.5 million square miles. Citizens in the Roman empire were also separated because they spoke two different languages, Greek and Latin. Hadrian realized that the size of the empire made it harder to rule, so he started to pull troops back from most Mesopotamia. Also to create a boundary he built Hadrian's wall.
Why was the Empires economy booming?
Most people in the Roman empire made a living through farming and industry. Traders brought many fine things into Rome to please the rich Romans.Farms in Italy, Gaul, and Spain produced grapes and olives which were some of the main crop of Rome. Also farms in Britain and Egypt produced grain, another main crop of the Roman empire.
How were roads and money helpful?
In Rome a good transportation system was vital to the empires trade, during Pax Romana this system reached a total length of 50,000 miles. To also help with trade the Romans came up with one type of money that could be used all through out Rome. Another thing that improved trade was the Romans created a standard system of weights and measurements.
What inequality remained?
Through out the many years of peace inequality still remained, the peace did not reach all Romans. Most city dwellers remained poor and many remained slaves.
Pompeii: The Last Day
Today we learned about what life was like for some people on the last day in Pompeii. We saw what two gladiators, a hopeful senator, his family, a fullery owner, his wife, and navy general did on their last day. We saw the decisions that they made that ultimately decided the course of the rest of their life. At 1 P.M. the volcano exploded causing the ground to shake and pebbles and rocks to fall from the sky at high speeds. If hit by these rocks you could instantly be killed. At about 5 the navy general set out too rescue the people affected by the volcano. About 7 hours after the volcano erupted, the streets of Pompeii were basically deserted.
Today we learned about the many cities that were destroyed by Mount. Vesuvius and the different things that killed the people in the cities. We also learned what some peoples final moment were like. We saw different ways that people tried to fight, or escape death. Although most of these people failed in their fight to escape death one very important remained. Without this person we would not have know that what occurred that day was even scientifically possible.
